Why Study Maths?

Mathematics at A Level continues to build on the skills gained at GCSE. Pure mathematics continues to be central to this qualification, particularly developing calculus. In addition to this, applications of mathematics are introduced and explored looking specifically at statistical and mechanical methods. The diversity of this course enables students to enhance their logical and analytical skills. Through modelling and problem solving resilience can be heightened enabling creative and strategic solutions. Practise through structured solutions, proofs and justifications will help formulate reasoned arguments. Studying Mathematics at A level also complements many other subjects, particularly the sciences; biology, chemistry, physics, computer science and psychology.

What does the course involve?

The course will cover a broad range of topics within the areas of pure, mechanics and statistics, such as algebraic proofs, trigonometry, kinematics and statistical hypothesis testing. This qualification is 100% examination, as described below:

Where will Mathematics lead me, post Sixth Form?

Mathematics continues to be a well-respected ‘facilitating subject’ and it will certainly stand out on a university application. As such it is considered to be a very strong foundation for study at university, particularly courses such linked to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Gaining an A Level in mathematics opens up opportunities in a broad range of careers; from architecture to engineering to medicine.
