Entry Requirements: 4:4 in Science / 4 in two separate sciences

Why study Applied Science?

Applied Science is a broad-based qualification which includes elements of Biology, Chemistry and Physics and is more vocational in nature. Candidates can experience the scientific environment through several varied units of work. This course is ideal for students who don’t want to follow the highly academic A.Level science courses.

What does the course involve?

The course is assessed through 2 exams: Unit 1 Science Fundamentals, and Unit 2 Laboratory techniques. The 3 mandatory internal units are: Unit 6 Control of hazards in the laboratory, Unit 18 Microbiology and Unit 21 Product testing techniques.

Across two years the course will cover a selection of the following topics:

· Science Fundamentals

· Laboratory Techniques

· Scientific Analysis and Reporting

· Human Physiology

· Genetics

· Control of Hazards in the Laboratory

· Human Nutrition

· Cell Biology

· Testing Consumer Products

· Drug Development

· Microbiology

Where could Applied Science lead me post Sixth Form?

Progression to science-related courses in further or higher education, including healthcare professions, biotechnology fields, forensics and many more.
