KS3 Rationale

Covering: Graphic Design, Product Design, Ceramics, Photography, Textiles and Food Technology

Within Design Technology, we focus on equipping students with a wide range of practical, creative and technical skills that will support them both in school and in their future lives. The curriculum is designed to foster problem-solving, innovation, and independence through hands-on learning and real-world application.

Across the different DT disciplines, students will:

KS3 Curriculum Journey

Graphic Design
Explore visual communication, developing skills in layout, typography, digital design, and creative design thinking.

Product Design
Learn how products are developed, from initial concept to final prototype. Students investigate materials, construction methods and sustainable design practices.

Ceramics
Gain experience in working with clay, learning techniques such as hand-building, slab construction, and surface decoration, while understanding form, function and aesthetics.

Photography
Develop practical photography skills, including composition, lighting, editing and visual analysis, learning how images communicate ideas.

Textiles
Discover how textiles are developed from fibres to fabrics before creating their own textile art pieces. Students are introduced to hand and machine sewing, construction techniques, embellishment, and surface design.

Food Technology
Build essential cooking skills while learning about nutrition, healthy eating, meal planning and safe kitchen practice.
